Book Description:

Maxine “Max” Compton is in detention when the outbreak starts; so are several other students when Max’s best friend Brie storms in – chomping on the thigh bone of their favorite Home Ec teacher, Ms. Watkins!

Brie is a zombie, and quickly starts biting everyone in the room – even her best friend, Max!

When the class realizes what happens, it’s too late; they are all zombies – and they’re no longer alone.

Now a thin gray man in a white lab coat is testing them; making them read, and once they can no longer read, the zombies are led from the room, never to be seen again.

One by one the zombies stop reading, all but a few of them, Max included. Oh, and that cute thug she’s been crushing on for years, Cory Winthrop!

That’s when Max learns that there are good zombies, and bad zombies. And if she’s to survive, she has to pick a side.

Who knew Detention could be this hard… or last forever?

Excerpt:

G-g-g,” the zombie sputters, black eyes focused intently on the page in front of her, tongue tied in an endless loop, frustration oozing out of every gray, decaying pore.
If she could still sweat, I know she would.
G-g-g….”
Her cold white hands grip the pages of the comic book like the edges of a life raft in a wild, raging sea.
If she could still cry, she’d already be bawling.
Instead she is locked in this endless loop, stammering, yammering, trying to find the keys to her lost humanity.
G-G-G….”
Her voice is raspy, like maybe her vocal chords have been sanded down, blow dried for days, and now look like strips of beef jerky hanging in the back of her throat, useless at his point except for her guttural scratching.
A-A-A….”
It’s been like this for five minutes; five endless, torturous, agonizing minutes.
M-M-M….”
Endless because, well, you’ve never realized how long a single minute—sixty short seconds—can stretch out until every stinking bleeding one of those sixty seconds is filled with a “G-G-G” or an “A-A-A or an “M-M-M.”
It’s like waiting for a stutterer to finish reading War & Peace, out loud, in one sitting, while you kneel on a bed of nails, with water dripping on your head, sitting next to your distant cousin from Alabama, with her whispering in your ears about her favorite catfish casserole recipe.
Torturous because I can see the word right in front of me and just want to finish it for her: “Gamma!” I want to scream. “Gamma! What you’ve been yammering for the last five minutes is ‘G-G-G-G-GAMMA,’ you freakin’ moron!”
Agonizing because this is no typical zombie; this is my best friend since third grade, Brie Cunningham.

Deleted Scene:

Cramped: A Deleted Scene from Detention of the Living Dead by Rusty Fischer, author of Detention of the Living Dead

Below please find a deleted scene from my new YA Paranormal, Detention of the Living Dead! In DOTLD, a group of kids are sitting in detention when a zombie shuffles in. Trapped, they all become zombies themselves; and that’s where the fun begins!!

But here, exclusively on this Blog, is a “deleted” scene about what happens when one lucky student discovers the ultimate place to hide out during a zombie apocolypse. I hope you enjoy it:

One minute Sylvie is there, clinging to my hand, running from the zombie cafeteria lady and the next, I hear a bloodcurdling scream and the sound of chomping.

I turn, only for an instant, and see the zombie cafeteria lady going to town on Sylvie’s ear like it’s a bowl of tater tots during B Lunch!

“No!” I scream, but that only makes cafeteria lady zombie look up and clamor to one knee. Sylvie is already gone. I can tell by the way her eyes are fluttering, just like John Taylor’s did before he turned zombie.

Just like that cute foreign exchange kid’s eyes did before he turned zombie. And the rest of them, every classmate I ever knew, all of them, their eyes flickered the same way… yup, now she’s up, groaning, black goo pouring out of her mouth and the cafeteria zombie lady is helping her up so they can both come after me.

Fat chance! I peel out, past the trophy case and the water fountain and the Homecoming banner torn and bloody and out toward the east exit.

I’m almost there, dodging gurgling zombies and random body parts lying in my path when I see a dozen or more zombies just lurking around the exit, waiting for anyone dumb enough (i.e. me) to get anywhere close to them.

I turn, about to bolt in the opposite direction when I spot Sylvie Zombie and Cafeteria Lady Zombie shuffling arm in arm in my general direction.

I make a “grrr” face and turn, spotting a red door marked “Custodial.”

“Gross,” I grunt, shoving it open and slamming it shut, locking it from the inside.

It won’t do much good, the locked door I mean, but it might buy me enough time to find someplace better to hide. I look around, whispering, “Hey, Mr. Simmons, are you in here?”

I don’t know Mr. Simmons, but there is a plaque on the wall for Custodian of the Year, 1998 and underneath it says, “Claude Simmons,” but I was taught you shouldn’t call old people by their first names unless they tell you to.

I listen but no one says anything back. Outside the door shapes shuffle and shadows blur but nobody jiggles the door handle so I use the last few minutes of my life to find a better hiding spot.

There are three walls in the custodian’s closet, plus the door. The wall across from the door has three lockers buried behind a fleet of mop carts. Seriously, there must be six, seven, eight mop carts lined up.

The wall to my left has a big boiler, angry and red, which would explain why I’m already sweating buckets. The wall to my right has Mr. Simmons’ plaque and a hook for his raincoat.

So, that’s about… bang. Someone, or something, has started banging on the closet door. Bang. Shuffle. Bang. Bang. Scrape. I sweat some more and squeeze between two mop buckets to bang open the first locker in the row, the one tight against the wall.

It smells like feet and is hotter than the rest of the room, which is saying something, but I squeeze in anyway and shut the door behind me.

It’s bigger than it looks inside, and I can actually stand up. And move around. And see! There are five slats in the top of the locker, which is about as big as a shower stall and, if I keep sweating, going to be just as wet in about ten minutes.

Once my eyes adjust to the dark I can look around and see a janitor’s uniform hanging from the bar behind my head, and a lunchbox at my feet, and a flashlight and a six pack of soda and holey moley, I’ve hit the mother lode of zombie Armageddon hideouts.

As long as the zombies don’t… oh, but wait, here one comes. No, two, wait, three. Four! They smash through the closet door, stumbling in and tumbling into the mop buckets.

I flinch and kneel down, looking for something to defend myself with. The zombies are closer now, grumbling, groaning, pounding, tapping, looking for a way to get in.

I open the lunch box, quickly, thinking maybe Mrs. Simmons packed a knife for her hubby to cut off his own crusts with.

Uggh. I almost gag. There’s no knife but Mrs. Simmons must have been made at her hubby this morning because she packed him a triple limburger, sauerkraut and toe jam sandwich on moldy rye. God, just opening up the lunchbox fills the entire locker with the funk of 10,000 years and… wait a minute.

The zombies, they’re… they’re… backing up. Grunting, stumbling over themselves to clamor away from the locker, shuffling out of the room.

The sandwich! It’s so gnarly, it’s instant zombie repellent!!!

So there you have it, a scene that never made it into the book and that you can only find here, on this very blog! Thanks for reading, and I hope it will add to your enjoyment of the book if you ever get to read Detention of the Living Dead, out this month from Decadent Books!

Yours in YA,

Rusty

Interview with Jerri Hines, Author of Time of the Nuxvenom

Today I will be interviewing Jerri Hines, author of Time of the Nuxvenom.

What are your favorite book(s)?

I love Lord of the Rings. I first picked it up when I was in college. I’ll admit I didn’t get far into the book. Then after the first movie Lord of the Rings, I picked it back up and absolutely loved it. I love the world J RR Tolkien created. I was totally engrossed in the story.

Hunger Games. The first book of the Hunger Games trilogy was the best book I read in 2010. Even though it is listed as a young adult read, I couldn’t put it down.

Game of Thrones series is the new one on my list.

Who is your favorite author?

Suzanne Collins. I love her imagination and her unique story concepts.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

I use life experience with a lot of imagination. Also, when I do research and discover an accomplishment of someone I didn’t know about such as Irena Sendler, who risked her life to save Jewish children during WWII, I get inspiration. I’m amazed by the courage and bravery of people who survived go through to survive in this world. I believe if I have a theme when I write is don’t give up.

Where is your favorite place to do your writing?

I have a room in my home my husband calls the cave.

What made you decide to become a writer?

Growing up, it was the only thing I wanted to be. It’s been a process. Taken a few detours, but I love writing because it’s creating. If I wasn’t writing, I would paint.

What is the hardest part of writing for you?

I don’t think it’s the writing. Writing to me is the easiest. Nowadays promoting is part of the writing process and that’s the hardest part. As an author, you are competing in an ocean of books trying to get some recognition, wanting someone to read your book. It is also the source of my greatest satisfaction…when I receive positive feedback on my book.

Tell us about your newest book.

Review:

Disclaimer: I received this book from the author in exchange for a review.

An enjoyable Highlander romance that had me wanted to smack the characters in one moment and cheer for them the next.

I must admit to not enjoying this book that much at the beginning. It felt like it was trying too hard to be a Highlander romance. It felt terribly cookie cutter like it was trying to hit a number of romance conventions. Marcus had an overdone instant attraction to her. Initially, I really disliked the romance aka creepy pursuit of Marcus towards Elise. I know what time period the book was set in, but the body's response is not consent. Despite his initial overwhelming desire, Marcus did show that he was coming to care for Elise although he still had boundary issues.

I liked Elise. She was strong, competent, and managed to escape a number of bad situations. One thing that I found was odd that she seemed to be quite strong for a woman, but seemed very weak other times. I did like how much she fought against Marcus' advances.

The background for this story did add an element of danger although sometimes it felt too overblown, especially with such a bad baddie. I did like how everything turned out though. Elise's response to what happened to her was a realistic one and I really liked how Marcus knew he had to work hard to help her.

Recommendation: I would recommend this book to fans of Highlander romance and romance with strong heroines.

More History Please

1215: The Year of Magna Carta by Danny Danziger, John Gillingham

Summary: Surveying a broad landscape through a narrow lens, 1215 sweeps readers back eight centuries in an absorbing portrait of life during a time of global upheaval, the ripples of which can still be felt today.
At the center of this fascinating period is the document that has become the root of modern freedom: the Magna Carta. Never before had royal authority been challenged so fundamentally. The Great Charter would become the foundation of the U.S. government and legal system, and nearly eight hundred years later, two of Magna Carta's sixty-three clauses are still a ringing expression of freedom for mankind. But it was also a time of political revolution and domestic change that saw the Crusades, Richard the Lionheart, King John, and -- in legend -- Robin Hood all make their marks on history.
The events leading up to King John's setting his seal to the famous document at Runnymede in June 1215 form this rich and riveting narrative that vividly describes everyday life from castle to countryside, from school to church, and from hunting in the forest to trial by ordeal. For instance, women wore no underwear (though men did), the average temperatures were actually higher than they are now, the austere kitchen at Westminster Abbey allowed each monk two pounds of meat and a gallon of ale per day, and it was possible to travel from Windsor to the Hampshire coast without once leaving the forest.
Broad in scope and rich in detail, 1215 ingeniously illuminates what may have been the most important year of our history.
Review: An informative overview of late 12th, early 13th century life in Europe, especially England, but is quite light on the history leading up to the Magna Carta.
I was eager to read this book because I am trying to learn more about medieval history and the Magna Carta is an important document. I was disappointed in this book. Perhaps it's another case of I should read the summaries more closely, but with a book titled 1215: The Year of the Magna Carta, I thought it would focus a lot more on the actual Magna Carta. The actual chapter that dealt with the Magna Carta did focus a little on the history of the rebellion, how the Magna Carta came to be, and how it was dealt with after John's death, but that was only about twenty pages or so. I'll have to read a more academic work to learn more about the history King John and the Magna Carta.
This book did provide some interesting information on how people lived in that time period and what the world was like then. It's a good primer for someone seeking brief, basic information, but for somehow who wishes to study medieval literature and history, it's much too light on information. It's fluff.
Rating:

Recommendation: I would recommend this book to those looking for a brief overview of medieval life in 12th and 13th England and Europe.

You're a Daughter of What Now?

Boyfriend from Hell by Jamie Quaid

Disclaimer: I received this book from the publisher in exchange for a review.

Summary: Justine (Tina) Clancy is just an ordinary law student with a faulty arrest record, a part-time job in Baltimore’s radioactive Zone, and a family secret so bizarre even she doesn’t believe it. That is, until in a fit of fury she damns her boyfriend to hell—and it’s exactly where he ends up.

Much to her own surprise, Tina is apparently one of Saturn’s daughters, with the power to wield vigilante justice. But poor Max didn’t deserve to go up in flames, even if he did almost run her over with her own car. Tina’s convinced someone cut the brakes—and now a relentless nemesis is stalking her through the Zone’s back alleys, where buildings glow, statues move, and chemical waste exposure comes with interesting consequences. Tina’s usually a loner, but now she needs a posse like no other: a shape-shifting kitten, an invisible thief, a biker gang, a snake-charming private detective, a well-meaning cop, and her sleazy, sexy boss. But in between freeing Max from hell, saving her own neck, and solving a mystery that threatens the Zone and her newfound friends, how is she ever going to study for finals?

Review: An interesting although quite confusing supernatural story with some weird relationships thrown in for a good measure.

I was happy to have a main female character who had a physical defect instead of either extremely beautiful or views herself as plain or unattractive, but everyone finds her attractive (but sadly that changes in the book). Tina says she has no issues with self esteem yet says she knows that Max is probably the best she can do for a girl like her. I wanted to smack her then and a number of times in the book. Not everyone is incredibly beautiful or has a killer body. Plenty of people are average.

The relationships in this book were a bit odd. I couldn't really get a good feel for how she felt about Max and even less for how she felt about Andre, who was sleazy at times yet nice at other times. Even less certain for me was what exactly the Zone was, what exactly Tina was, and what exactly the Zone did to people. If Tina is one of Saturn's daughters, how exactly did that come about? What is because of her heritage or did the Zone help bring it out? And what about everyone else who lives in the Zone and gets unusual powers? More explanation please.

Recommendation: I would recommend this book to fans of supernatural fiction or fantasy stories with main characters with physical defects (at least at first).

The City of the Mirage by Jerome Brooke

The City of the Mirage by Jerome Brooke is now on Amazon. The Divine Astarte is one of the last of her race. Her kind seeded many worlds with life. One of these realms was the planet of the Warrior.

The City of the Mirage in a dark fantasy.

Astarte is feared, not loved by her people - she is the Destroyer of Worlds. She is served by a legion of shield maidens. These cruel warriors are feared by all. They commit all manner of atrocities, such as impalement.

The people of her empire are also terrorized by the Beast Men. They are the offspring of members of an alien race and the daughters of men. They feed on human flesh. They use captive women to breed more of their kind.

Jerome Brooke was born in Indiana. He now lives in the Kingdom of Siam. He is married to Jira, a princess of the lost Kingdom of Nan.

Brooke seeks to write texts that are suitable as eBooks. Readers may desire to print out chapters or short stories. Texts that can be read in a single evening are often best.

Series of stories and books are a good option. The Conan stories are a good example. They can be read as solo stories. Read in a series, they have some of the qualities of a novel or narrative.

Jerome lives in Chonburi, near Pattaya. He has written a number of other books and stores in the Divine Astarte series - and a number of related series and cycles. Many short stores in the series have appeared in Welcome to Wherever and other magazines.

The Astarte and related series share the same setting. The stories take place far into the future. The stars have been seeded with life by the race of Astarte. She and her kind are worshiped as gods by the people of their realm. Many of the books and stories share the same characters. Read in sequence, they often form a narrative. I think of the series as a hybrid. The chapters were published as short stories in magazines, and can be read alone. Read in sequence, they form a novella or cohesive book. The same was true of the Conan series of Robert E. Howard or the Sherlock home stories.

Excerpt:
The muse stood at the side of the blind bard.  She whispered in his ear, telling him the history of the demigod, of the Conqueror.
Myth of the Lady of the Myst, II, vii.
The mirage appeared very close.  I could see the white towers of the city, as they shimmered on the horizon.  I wiped the sweat from my brow with my sleeve, and took a sip of water from my canteen.
I looked over my shoulder.  I could no longer see the enemy chase cars. They had been in pursuit since last night, when my plane went down.  I had parachuted from my wounded craft, and landed in the desert. After I landed, I fled into the empty waste, hoping that my beacon would be heard by our rescue.
I resumed walking.  Perhaps I had come all this way only to die of thirst in this wasteland.  I checked my canteen.  Almost empty.
I tried my radio once more.  Nothing – not even static.
I continued walking in the light breeze.  I soon came to a boulder field.  I walked among the rocks for a few minutes, until I came to the edge of a ravine.  I glanced over the edge, and saw a fast moving stream below.
I climbed down the steep slope to the floor of the ravine.  I filled my canteen, and pulled off my flight suit.  I plunged into the water, and rinsed off the dust.
I sat upon a rock near the edge of the stream, to rest for a time.  I soon pulled on my flightsuit, and began to follow the stream.  As I walked, a strange blue mist began to form, near the ground.  The mist persisted, even tho a breeze began to stir the air.
I came to a large bolder jutting out into the stream.  I walked around it, and saw movement out of the corner of my eye.  I turned, and saw a woman of middle years stepping out of the stream.
Hello,”   she said with a smile.  She spoke with a heavy accent.
Hello,” I replied, and smiled.  She had black hair, and dark, olive skin.  She did not seem to mind that she had nothing on, in the strong breeze.  This was all passing strange.
I am the Lady of the Myst.  Are you lost, Warrior?”
Well, yes.  I am heading west,”  I managed to collect myself and say.
She pointed down the ravine. “Follow the stream.  It leads to the plain.  If you see anyone else, they may help you.”
I nodded.
I must leave you now.  But you will see me soon, when you are ready.”  She came up to me, and wrapped her arms around me.  She kissed, and gently bit my neck.  I felt a little dizzy, and also felt a strong attraction to her.
Am I Enthralled by the Lady, the beautiful Lady Without Mercy?”  I asked myself.
