UnGuarded by Ashley Robertson

Disclaimer: I received this book from the author in exchange for a review.

Summary: Guardian angel Selene was so close to becoming an archangel—the supreme of all beings—until she fell in love with Cole, a forbidden dark one. Once she discovers her vampire lover has been kidnapped and the only way to save him is by abandoning her number one priority—Caitlyn, her human charge—there really is only one answer in Selene’s mind, even though leaving Caitlyn unguarded will most likely cause Selene to fall from grace.

But her choice to save Cole doesn’t come without a price…and now Selene is racing against time to not only save her dark lover, but find a way to keep Caitlyn alive as well.

With the help of a new vampire ally, Luke, Selene will push her diminishing angel abilities to the point where her very existence lies in the balance. Now threatened with the chance of becoming a fallen angel or even dying, Selene can only pray she’ll have enough time—and good grace—to save the ones she loves.

Review: An action packed story with plenty of the supernatural and an unusual love triangle.

The story starts off with Selene already in love with Cole. There are flashbacks throughout the story and of course plenty of interaction throughout the book, but we never do learn how they met or fell in love. I would love to read a book about how the two fell in love. I don't usually compare books in reviews, but I found myself comparing UnGuarded to Halo. In Halo, Bethany risks everything for instalove with a boy and not a damn thing happens. Selene is actually in love with Cole and does suffer the consequences for her actions. Also, Selene isn't useless like Bethany is. So, if you hanker for a romance involving angels and forbidden love, check out UnGuarded instead of Halo.

The book does start off a little slow, but once the action starts, it doesn't stop. I was not expecting the love triangle in the story, but it was well done and actually had a reason for being. I enjoyed the mythology of the different creatures and races and the multiple worlds. I had a few issues with the book, mainly little quips. A few phrases got on my nerves since they were repeated multiple times. Smarted is one that comes to mind. Also, whooshing. People were constantly whooshing everyone. There was a point in the story that I felt that the book should have ended. I'm sure people may have been disappointed with that ending, but I feel that would have been a stronger note for the story to end on.

Recommendation: I would recommend this book to those that enjoy supernatural fiction or romance with vampires, angels, and/or demons.
